Andy Pye Biography
Andy Pye holds a Bachelor of Arts through Deakin University (2009), and a Master of Teaching (Secondary literature, Indigenous broad histories and cultures—double major sequences) through Charles Sturt University (2019). He has exhibited widely since 2000, and his works are held in private and corporate collections in Australia, the USA, Canada, France and the United Kingdom.
After completing schooling in Geelong, Pye began painting in Melbourne, documenting the alleys and terrace houses of North Fitzroy, Cartlon and was inspired by artists such as Danila Vassilieff. Now based in El Dorado, North East Victoria, Pye works at prolific scale and output into his mid career. Art critics and leading contemporary gallerists consider Andy Pye as becoming a household name in Australian Art this decade and has the potential to become our next Arthur Boyd or Fred Williams.
Pye seeks out sites which many would consider inaccessible, and produces not only a pictorial record of the place, but an experience of the order and chaos, the variable quality of light across seasons, and the character of the landmarks, vegetation and wildlife that inhabit these spaces. In instances, Pye also records the fact that, as inaccessible as these spaces may appear, many still show the signs of human presence. But above all, the artist seeks to enliven the sacred in life and art through the Australian landscape.
Varia Karipoff, the former print editor at Art Guide Australia, commented of Pye’s practice:
‘Andy Pye articulates landscape like a writer; his hills and gullies can be literal, oneiric, or literary, but in every scene, he weaves a psychological drama that is richly suggestive of narrative. Pye heads into the bush to clarify his thoughts and to cope with his memories – to find certainty in himself. Perhaps his characters – the boulders and trees – are not so much alive in the spirit in animistic sense, but in the artist’s familiarity with them.’

About Durrant Contemporary Art
Jamie Durrant, son of highly collected Australian artist Ivan Durrant, has grown up living among quality Australian contemporary artworks. During his teens and early 20s, he gained an appreciation for Australian master painters, including Albert Tucker, John Blackman and Arthur Boyd, as works by these painters hung in the family home. Over the years, due to extended viewing and tuition by his father Ivan, Jamie has developed an eye for quality works, particularly works of Australian landscapes, abstracts, and contemporary Australian subjects.
Between 2016 and 2019, Jamie was curator of Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery in North East Victoria, where he gained considerable insight into the style that equates to highly valued contemporary Aboriginal paintings. This role saw Jamie curate exhibitions including artists Trevor ‘Turbo’ Brown, Craig Charles, Billy Doolan, Dennis Nelson Tjakamarra, Russell Butler, Luke Cummins, Kudditji Kngwarreye, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi and more.
Jamie represents highly collected Victorian artist Andy Pye in Victoria and Queensland. In 2022, Andy exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney with a series of near-sell-out exhibitions, elevating his appeal and the awareness of his work. In 2023, his work was featured in major Australian state-based exhibitions in Benalla and Wangaratta regional art galleries.
Jamie also deals in works by mid-career artist John Waller, offering a limited and exclusive selection of his technically sophisticated landscape paintings. John’s work depicts visually beautiful yet complex aerial view geometry and planar space compositions.
Durrant Contemporary Art is a partner gallery with Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery and a Gold Coast representative partner of the Lockhart River Arts Association (far-North Queensland). Sales of secondary market stock, including Aboriginal artworks, are also handled.
